There’s too much hype in the online world
There is so much bull in the world of entrepreneurship that it’s a wonder we ever succeed at anything we try. I see here-today and gone-tomorrow online entrepreneurs promising the world for no work and no money. Here’s some of the ridiculous online marketing I’ve seen.
- Don’t worry about anything, just go hire this one ghost writer over on Fiverr and she’ll make you rich in 30 days.
- This one person is a single mom with 7 kids living in the back of a van, has no education, and doesn’t even own a computer but I helped her make 6 figures in 7 days.
- All you have to do is create a killer title and your 20 page book will sell and you’ll be taking all the money you can handle to the bank.
Six things you must do to be successful as a business owner Click To Tweet
- Have to offer a product or service (or both) that a certain set of people need – it solves a problem for those people, or it helps them lead a better life.
- Learn how to talk about what you do and what you are offering in a way that is interesting and makes that certain set of people stop and say, “Hey, I might need that, it would help me.”
- Know how to drive traffic (people) to your offer. You can do this in many ways, but you have to do it. If you can’t drive traffic to your offer (to your sales page) then I don’t care what you have to offer, you’re going to suck eggs as a business person.
- When someone tells you he (or she) sent out a single email and made a small fortune and you can do the same, don’t believe it. Why? Because that person has an email list of several hundred thousand people and you probably don’t. At that level, it’s a numbers game – a certain number of people will buy when you’ve got very large email lists. At 200,000 people even if you only sold to 1% that’s 2000 sales. But when you’ve got an email list of 1000 you’ve got to be far more targeted and be much better at explaining the benefits of what you do. 1% of 1000 is only 10.
- Have integrity and high quality in what you offer.
- Learn to think like a CEO and lead your business, every single day. Build good offers, build up your visibility and reputation, offer good service.
This is if you are in it for the long term. If you’re looking to scam people one time, make a killing, and run away then you don’t have to worry about being a CEO or having integrity.
The 9 basics of business for small business owners Click To Tweet
- Who are you?
- Why do you want to own your own business?
- What do you have to offer that a certain set of people actually need?
- Do they think they need it, or is it only you thinking they need it?
- What benefit is what you offer – what does is do for that customer?
- How are you going to get the word out?
- Who is your best customer?
- Who is your worst customer, the people you don’t want to sell to?
- How committed are you to doing this business? If you failed at it, would it really matter to you? Would you be destitute? Is your business “nice to have” but not really necessary for you to survive?
For help with who you are and what you do, register for my Maximize Your Message workshop, coming up in early February. If you want to increase your business it’s going to help you.
What’s the benefit of this workshop? You’ll be able to clearly and concisely talk about who you are, what you offer, and how it will benefit your customers. You’ll attract the best customers and at the same time repel the ones who are not right for you.
Create a business that does good for you and for your customers. Wear your CEO hat and understand that owning a business can be super-frustrating and super-exciting. You can do what you love. You can help a lot of people. You can save for your retirement and be financially secure. You can be your own boss. To do that takes consistent action and commitment.
If you do this, you will rise above the marketplace because, guess what? So few people do it. You’ll stand out from that alone.

Even when a company is just starting out, it’s important to be able to answer these sorts of questions. Not only does this help instill trust in others, but it gives future business owners an idea of what they would like to accomplish in the future. This applies to any industry, too.
