Fear of Mailing – When You’re Afraid To E-Mail Your List With An Offer

February 7, 2014 by Sue Painter 1 Comment

fear of mailingOne common fear new business owners have is a fear of mailing their list. Your list is the names and e-mail addresses of those who have opted in to hear from you.

Here's a question I saw the other day on a private Facebook forum.

“I'm stuck and frustrated and really angry with myself. Have got to get past whatever is keeping me from getting what I've worked so hard for so long. I've done the work. I have a great offer. Why am I so reluctant to mail to my list as much as I need to convert and make sales? Who am I afraid of offending? Why do I limit my success? Why do I hold back?”

Almost everyone feels a fear of mailing their list when they are new in business. Here's why:

  • My list is small and I don't want people to unsubscribe
  • Someone on my list might get mad at me for asking them to purchase my offer
  • I'm afraid my offer isn't very strong and no one will buy

Fear of mailing is really fear of failing. And in business you will sometimes fail – if you don't, you aren't trying hard enough! I like my clients to have a failure or two throughout the year – that means they are pushing themselves and their business forward. I tell them, “It's not failure, it's feedback.”

Think of it another way. Think of the people you reach who DO need your offer. They are looking for a solution to a problem that your offer specifically addresses, and they want and need that solution. You will never engage with them and they will never buy if they don't hear from you.

What about the people who unsubscribe? They are saying “your offers aren't for me right now.” Be glad they have made that decision – you don't want to waste your time and money e-mailing people who are never going to buy. You're in business to help people and make money, after all!

Usually, fear of mailing is a form of lacking confidence about your marketing. Get me or someone else to help you organize your marketing so that you know what you are offering, know that your prices are solid, and know how to present your offers well. (If you need help with presenting, you can get my e-book How To Have a Sales Conversation That Works.)

There will always be people coming toward you and moving away from you, not only in business but in life. Take a deep breath and get over your fear of mailing. Your bank account will show the results – and you'll become more confident, too!

LOVE THIS! This was me a year ago and admittedly I fall back in that fear of mailing every now and again! It is easy for me to send my great news regarding our mission updates, not so much when it comes to need for help ones. But I have learned to get over it and get the info out. Now I am working on being okay with unsubscribers… still developing my thick skin on that one 🙂
