Free Work – When To Just Say No for Small Business Owners

June 7, 2013 by Sue Painter 12 Comments

Here’s a vlog (video blog) about a decision I made to turn down a request for free work. Does it ever make sense to say yes? I’ll show you what turns a no into a yes in this vlog.

Great tips Sue and so common unfortunately and I’m with Mitch it also reminds me of networking, and people who ask if ‘they can pick your brain’..

Them wanting you to do all of the work, reminded me of the coffee shop we went to yesterday. We ordered at the counter, toted the coffee to our table and bussed the table when we were done. And they had a tip jar on the counter, so I took a dollar for my efforts. (just kidding about taking the tip, but really?).

Sue, what an excellent case study and so very useful. I started participating in telesummits and you’re right, some people just don’t have their ducks in a row. I even had someone approach me who didn’t even have a web presence! except for the summit site – so the whole credibility thing is so important

I don’t blame you for not taking them up on this offer. The questions you asked should have been answered up front–without you even asking. There were definitely a lot of red flags in that invitation.

Sue, this is very interesting and a question that comes up in our work all the time. I appreciate your well thought out answer. I really agree about the give to one another and help one another. I am trying not to laugh too hard since you already are an expert. Ouch! These people need some PR help!
