Gain Perspective When You’re Done
I don’t know a business owner who hasn’t had to work to gain perspective over a sticky situation in her business. It’s a team problem, or a customer service issue, or a cash flow situation, or an issue with a supplier. It happens – you try hard to fix it and no matter what you try it just doesn’t work. You’re stuck.
There’s a great book about gaining perspective using your peripheral vision by the author Mary Catherine Bateson. It’s a short book and a great read. I’ve also created a very short (less than 2 minute) video about occupying your brain with something else and letting your peripheral vision hunt down your solution … something I learned from Phoebe the Beagle. After you watch, please leave a comment. Thanks!
Set up two standby plans for when you need to gain perspective. What are the signs you’re done with a problem? What helps you get away from it and allow your peripheral vision to hunt for your solution? Gaining the right perspective is a key element to success in business – it keeps you from getting caught in the drama of day to day operations. It’s a good thing to step away.
