Owning a business as a personal growth technique is a surefire way to learn more lessons than you ever thought possible.
I also love how clear you are about change, adaptability and challenges. AND great advice about NOT quitting. I’ve been blogging about this a bit, too. I think the reason most people fail is because they quit and they don’t go get the support they need to expand and build the skills that don’t come naturally.

Too often business owners find themselves being run (ragged) by their business instead of running their business … I know because I was one of those business owners when I first started my business! It is so critical to have support to help get you through the tough times, and to bounce ideas off when you need it!
Jennifer, I think we have all been there at some point in time. But as you say, it’s how we respond and fix that (or not).

The setting of unrealistic expectations is part of the problem.
People get all hopped up on the phone or at an event when
clever marketers are convincing them to do things they are
not going to earn a living at doing. Then the lack of a proper plan
combined with numerous other issues all combine to a bad ending.
Mitch,
I agree that sometimes expectations about what one’s business will do are unrealistic – which is why I am such a believer in planning! I know you are, too.

My biggest successes have come from being a part of a peer group. There are so many good points in this video, Sue. You could literally make videos out of each section 🙂
Thanks, Jessica, maybe I will!
I agree that a lot of people don’t have the inclination to the backend of the business. I am amazed at some of them making 6 figures and still run a deficit because they are not paying attention to the back end and knowing their costs.
Wow having supporters surely makes sense. Now I just have to find some folks who might be available and willing to be my supporters. I think I also need to improve my sales skills. Going to have to make sure at least one of those folks is a super sales person. Thanks for the great video.
Hi Mira,
Remember that supporters are not coaches, they are your “go to” “raise you up” people – all about mindset in the moment. Get a good coach to teach you sales.

I agree, you do need to be able to deal with uncertainty and change but you need to enjoy this aspect of having your own business. Interesting and sad that most people quit just before they make it. Getting the marketing and PR training made the world of difference in taking my biz to the next level – this is an another area I think you do need to enjoy!
Trudy,
I so agree – you have to enjoy it or you will avoid it forever!

Great tips here, Sue. I really love the idea of having 3 supporters to go to when you feel like throwing in the towel. In addition to the 8 reasons why small business owners quit that you mentioned, I think that not mastering sales is another one. When you’re not generating the sales you want, it’s easy to give up. You absolutely need the support of others to lift your spirits some time. I also like the idea of focusing on the solution not just the problem–otherwise you’re just complaining and that isn’t productive.
Hi Tiffany,
I totally agree – mastering sales is part of it.
