Have you had periods of time when you are dissatisfied or unhappy? Most of us go through these times – it's a part of being human. The other day I was talking to one of my own mentors, a man I've learned from for over 15 years. I was unhappy about a few things going on in life and business, and had been feeling deeply dissatisfied over these things. In my own typical fashion, I wanted them fixed right now!
Instead, I ended up getting an assignment to read and think about a quote from Ken Wilber, a prolific writer and one of the world's most well known contemporary philosophers. Here's the quote.
“The movement of descent and discovery begins at the moment you consciously become dissatisfied with life. Contrary to most professional opinion, this gnawing dissatisfaction with life is not a sign of mental illness, nor an indication of poor social adjustment, nor a character disorder. For concealed within this basic unhappiness with life and existence is the embryo of a growing intelligence, a special intelligence usually buried under the immense weight of social chance. A person who is beginning to sense the suffering of life is, at the same time, beginning to awaken to deeper realities, truer realities. For suffering smashes to pieces the complacency of our normal fictions about reality, and forces us to become alive in a special sense to see carefully, to feel deeply, to touch ourselves and our world in ways we have heretofore avoided. It has been said and truly I think, that suffering is the first grace. In a special sense, suffering is almost a time of rejoicing for it marks the birth of creative insight.”
In my own work with my clients I see frequently a deep dissatisfaction or unhappiness with the way things are. When a person reaches that point they either start on the path of discovery (as Wilber says) or they sink deeper into despair.
As entrepreneurs we have only the first option – to walk the path of discovery. Part of our commitment to being a business owner is a commitment to personal growth.
Here's a short (3 minute) video I made for when you are dissatisfied or unhappy. Accepting that feeling is the beginning of ending it. After you watch it, I'd love to have your comment below.
I'd never had the thought that dissatisfaction was the beginning of a new path. Have you?
